{shooting into the sun}

Aw, I wish we were there right now. In Oahu. These are a few shots we took on our very last day in Ko'Olina. On the previous five days, we would all head in right before magic hour so we could get dinner started and bathe all the kids. On this last night, we took full advantage of that glowing light and had some fun experimenting with shooting into the sun, which helps to achieve that silhouette effect. I think we finally got it right with that last shot. We squeezed every last bit out of that early evening, and I honestly think time stood still (for a handful of minutes, anyway).

Something else I've been experimenting with lately: Going with the flow. I almost, almost started beating myself up for not having returned to a reliable blogging schedule since the start of the new year. However, I stopped myself. Rather, I've been visiting this space when inspiration strikes, and I've been having the most fun reading all of your inspiring blog posts without worrying about any looming personal blog post deadlines. I realize this lackadaisical approach isn't going to get me (or this blog) anywhere fast. But, hey, who says that I need to get or be anywhere? I will get back on that bike soon. For now, I'm enjoying the journey and the view.

Have you been experimenting with anything new lately?

  3. So beautiful! I love all three of these shots -- and I also love that they're all taken in one of my favorite places. It's wonderful that you're taking an intuitive approach to blogging. Sometimes it's hard to remember that our blogs don't define who we are; they're just an extension of who we are. I'm glad for the reminder of that.

  5. Gorgeous photos! I hope you have that last one displayed at home somewhere... it's such happiness. We take a family trip to the Oregon coast every summer, but in most of our photos we are bundled up in fleece jackets with wild hair from the strong coast winds. :P Sounds like you have a healthy approach to blogging. Some of my favorite blogs are ones that don't publish regularly... it always seems like such a treat when there is a new post! :)

  9. Beautifully articulated, my friend. Can I confess something? I came too close to letting this space define me, and I wasn't liking the feeling of it, which is why I had to step back a bit. It has made all the difference.

  13. Thanks, Christine! It is "better to do things we love when we are really inspired to do them" rather than forcing it. I suspect you guys would see right through any forced posts.
    Oh, new white paint sounds refreshing; Just in time for spring. Good luck finding the right shade! Oh, hey, I just remembered that the perfect shade of white paint was shared in the latest issue of Rue Magazine. Check it out if you get the chance.

  15. "...the kissing your daughter's back" - I love that, Sam. Thank goodness for photographs as we will always have these memories now, especially since my mind is slipping in my old age. Ha!
    This new flow has definitely allowed for more room to be experimental and creative, which I really, really needed. x

  17. Thanks for speaking up about your blogging schedule. I just haven't felt like blogging (pretty much since the start of the year too) and it's nice to hear someone else say "hey, you know what- that's ok!" It's supposed to be fun and a creative outlet, not a chore!

  18. What great pictures! Why can't CA have warm water in the winter? :-) I've been feeling the same lately with blogging - think another BYW class is in need for me to get inspired again!  Enjoy your down-time! xo!

  19. Hawaii, oh I miss thee!  I want to go back to that magical place too...

    Sometimes it is good to just go with the flow...I have been feeling rather sluggish lately and sometimes feel bad about it. In turn when I feel bad I get even less inclined to finish anything. So instead of fighting it I try to embrace it and go with the flow as well. Sometimes I think it is the weather and once spring starts I might spring back into action. Have not been experimenting with anything lately, boringly stick to the same old same old routine. xx

    PS. Lovely photos!
