{wear in the world: san francisco...}

at the beginning of the month i mentioned that our family was scooting off on a road trip up north. (just think: seven hours of "are we there yet?") the family and i will be visiting some old friends, one of which is a good friend from college and the other is the sister of my college friend. in short, we all go way back. in fact, we all lived together in the sunset district and in the mission district of san francisco back in the 1990's. ah, memories.

the plan is to spend a few days with our good friends right outside of the city and then a couple of days right in the heart of san francisco [insert pun here]. in my time living in san francisco, there's one thing i learned for certain: the city has micro-climates, meaning that if it's hot in the mission district, it could be very cool in the marina district. thus, come prepared by dressing in layers.

so, here's what i think might be the perfect outfit for a day in the city:
  • grab your husband's shawl collar cardigan and you will be ready for any fog that rolls in.
  • for the warmer parts of the city, let's bring the sweater vest back, shall we? if your papa has one in his closet, go steal it right now.
  • a pretty polka dot scarf.
  • a pair of boyfriend jeans for a relaxed and comfortable look (a.k.a. leaving room to eat your weight in dim sum).
  • cross body bag for hands/worry free shopping at the ferry building marketplace or taking in the sites at the california academy of science.
  • bringing up the rear, comfortable walking shoes. actually, i really love these in red. #oldschool
now, if i could somehow multiply this outfit by three, i will be all set. what's your favorite association with san francisco? please don't say rice-a-roni. you will die a slow death of a million paper cuts.

happy hump day everyone!

21 Send Me Your Thoughts:

  1. Oh, sign me up for anything that involves mens sweaters and comfortable jeans. I love the comfy androgynous look so, so much. Can't wait to break out all those layers! (come on, fall!). Have an awesome time catching up with your girlfriends in San Fran! Take lots of pictures. I've never been but it's been on my list for a while. Mostly because the last time J went it was with his ex and I'd like to replace that memory for him, haha.  I do like the streetcars and the fancy painted houses that were at the beginning of Full House (er, that was San Fran, right?). Enjoy! xo

  3. This is cracking me up since I was just finishing up a post on our trip last weekend up to the East Bay and San Francisco with the kids! We survived the long drive- wasn't too bad. And sounds like we had a similar itinerary- we spent a day in the Mission, went to the Academy of Sciences and I wore my boyfriend jeans constantly :) Have a wonderful time!!

  4. i love the outfit you put together! that's probably what i would take, but i would throw in a pair of leggings (for that extra room so i can stuff myself) and a utility jacket! the utility jacket i found to be perfect for the san francisco weather. it's light and it keeps you warm when you need it to and uber cute!! :) i go to san francisco probably 3 times a year! and my favorite association is the food and coffee! hope you have a wonderful trip! and make sure you have enough entertainment for the kids for the car ride :)

  5. That is one of my favourite San Francisco prints!  Hrrmm, my favourite association with San Francisco is Russian Hill because that's where one of my best friends lives.  I think his street is one of the steepest and walking out of his home just makes me laugh every time because it's just so ridiculously angled

  7. I have romantic ideas in my head about SF, and this poster is feeding these thoughts just nicely. I absolutely love the outfit you put together... and the jcrew sneakers in red will be perfect!

  8. "Fancy painted houses" was definitely Full House in San Francisco. The houses are really painted in multi-colors. Well, for that reason alone, you need to get yourself and BF to SF immediately. (You're funny!)

  9. This Friday. Oh, I love that memory, Teri. I'm pretty sure that I've been to Nest. A home store right? I really hope to use our time wisely in the city and see all the latest and greatest places. Though, with kids in tow, best laid plans and all that.

  10. I can't believe you just made the same trip, Erin. What are the chances? Well, it gives me a little peace to read that the drive wasn't that bad. I need to read your post. ;)

  11. Jin, you know me so well. I came this close to picking a utility jacket and leggings! In real life, I'll be sure to throw that into the packing mix. I remember your post from your last trip to SF...It looked amazing!

  12. It is pretty ridiculous and almost gravity defying how steep some of those hills are. Yes, Russian Hill having some of the steepest.

  13. That's a wonderful memory, Noreen. If I'm remembering correctly, I believe the de Young is right across the way from the Academy of Science. Might have to make our way over.

  14. San Francisco is a pretty romantic city. When I lived there,  I always thought the city would be more fun to live in as part of a couple rather than single. Thank you, Leah.

  15. I have never been to SF, and I would love to go. My mom was just there last year and loved it. My turn now. I love the outfit you put together, especially the bag (although I might need something bigger for my camera) and the shoes. Those Nikes! I grew up on waffle trainers, and I might need to have a pair. :)

  16. Lol. It IS the San Francisco treat. I really can't wait to go to SF. It just seems like it would be my perfect city. Have a great trip!

  17. For the drive, we took our Mac and let the kids watch a movie (w/headphones) both ways, but just one. The rest of the time they mostly just hung out! We got lucky! They barely slept, though, and we did have to stop at McDonalds for breakfast on the way home (oh, the concessions we parents make!)

  18. I adore the SF print. Really great! More than the outfit I love your graphics and layout skills. They tell the whole story.

I hope you guys have a wonderful time and will enjoy many moments of laughter with your friends! Go safely xx

  19. Layers, layers, layers - that's been my motto while living in the City, so I think your outfit is perfect (and super cute to boot). Fingers crossed we'll have some sunny days while you and your family are in town (it is basically September, ie summer, here), but you never know.

I love San Francisco - it's been the backdrop of my post-college life, so many special and important moments/ memories. Hopefully you'll be able to fit in at least one nice dinner or brunch while you're here (so many fantastic options), and maybe check out Smitten Ice Cream in Hayes Valley for the kiddos. Have fun - xo!
