{at this moment: disneyland...}

as i mentioned on monday, we made our way over to disneyland to celebrate my daughter's third birthday. let me assure you, a great time was had by all. they don't call it the happiest place on earth for nothing. do you know how difficult it is to take photos of disneyland without any people in the shots? that's a rhetorical question. a visit to disneyland is a sensory overload and a study in social anthropology all rolled into one. however, the park is kept so clean and polished and user experience is taken so seriously, you tend to forget about the crowds and how many people are actually in the park (around 20k-50k, depending on the day).

here are some other fun facts that i discovered:
  • disneyland does not sell chewing gum because walt disney wanted to keep the park clean
  • the buildings along main street are built to create the effect of a longer street when entering the park and a shorter street when going back to your car
  • the streets of disneyland are washed and steam-cleaned after closing each day
  • more than 5,000 gallons of paint are used each year to keep disneyland looking fresh and new
  • matterhorn mountain is exactly 100 times shorter than the real thing at 147 feet
  • walt disney did not allow his male employees to have mustaches
  • when the moat around sleeping beauty’s castle was dredged, all the money recovered was given to charity
oh, and one more fun (true) story. my dad has a friend whose family owns the land that the disneyland parking structure is built on. they lease the land to disneyland and as a courtesy, he is allowed free entrance into disneyland, along with three guests, every day for life. (he kindly got us all in that day.) he told us that the parking structure alone makes $40 million dollars annually!

gosh, i hope you found all these fun facts as fascinating as i did, or did i let my nerdy side get the best of me? well, happy friday and have an awesome weekend! what are you all getting into this weekend? any fun plans?

ps~yes, those are climbers on the matterhorn. the matterhorn recently underwent a huge restoration. as part of the reopening, they apparently have live climbers scaling the moutain.
pps~had to sneak in a photo of the birthday girl. she is now officially tall enough to ride autopia and she had a blast.

24 Send Me Your Thoughts:

  1. Well, first of all: happy day to your daughter and happy happy day to all of you! Birthdays are (mostly) the best, aren't they? I feel so happy on Cal's birthday but always a little weepy too. Weepy in a good way. I love all these fun facts about Disney. Call me nerdy too! The one about the street feeling shorter going out is my favorite! What a relief! Happy weekend, dear. xo

  2. good morning, theresa.  happy birthday to your little one!  what a wonderful treat.  i've not been to disney (epcot once, but not the magic kingdom), so this is very interesting.  making the walk look long on the way in, and short on the way out - i'd like to know how they did THAT!  happy weekend - work here, and maybe some olympics.  supposed to run 13 miles tomorrow, but having foot issues.  rest won't hurt.

  3. Looks like it was a fun time! Never been to Disney Land. Very fun facts you shared :)  ps. I heard that gum is not easy to come by in Singapore either for that same reason.

  5. Seeing photos of Eames just fills my heart with joy.

I come from a small family. One of my cousins, living in Israel, had twins today. Lavi (the girl) and Kfir Chaim (the boy) who came out 30 mins later and wasn't breathing for some time. He is in an incubator and we are all praying for him to fight... being a Leo myself I have great hopes for him and believe he will pull through...

Great facts about Disneyland. Totally appeal to me. I'm delighted you went and 'got in for free'. Good return on his land, I say:)

    Happy weekend T.

  7. Awww!!!? Eames looks especially cute in her sweet little outfit! She must have felt elated to go on a more grown-up ride.

I loved all the fun facts about Disneyland and I think it's so cool that you got in for free because you're friends with Disney's landlord! :D

I'd love to take L someday and although The Hubster's not keen on Disneyland in general, he says he'd make an exception for Disneyland Tokyo - woo-hoo!!!

What am I up to this weekend? Getting our house ready for its close-ups/house-hunting, a visit from my brother-in-law and his fiancée for some wedding planning over lunch and a flower girl dress fitting for L. Have a good one! x

  8. Those are some fun facts!  I love the pictures, and that you had a happy day at Disneyland!  Micah has his first game tomorrow, so hopefully he remembers everything he learned at practice on Monday!  Wish we didn't miss all the fun, but hope we get to take advantage of Disneyland in the near future!

  9. Happy Birthday Miss E. DisneyLand is a faraway magical place in my head. Somewhere i dreamed of going as a kid, though not an attainable fantasy. Blows my mind that you live near it!
I love your facts... my nerdy side LOVES loves your facts!!!
Glad you all had a great time!

  10. Whoa! All those neat Disneyland factoids. I had no idea about any of them! It makes the whole thing seem a lot sweeter than I think of it as being.  I love that they gave all that money to charity and that they're nice enough to let your dad's friend have free entrance for life! What a cash cow that parking lot is, can you imagine?? I'd never have to work again, haha. Happy birthday again to E and tell her I just adore her little pink sneakers. Have a wonderful weekend, T!

  11. Love your Disneyland trivia. Wonder why Walt Disney is against mustaches?? Happy birthday to your daughter! Looks like you guys had a great time :)

  12. Yes, I don't know how they made the street look longer going in and shorter on the way out. Amazing, right? Thanks for the birthday wishes, Lauren. I can totally relate to the weepy part. The kids are growing too fast.

  13. Thank you, Noreen. Hm, I'm wondering if you went on that 13 mile run. Hopefully, you gave your footsies a rest.
That is a pretty amazing optical illusion on Disneyland's part. I wish I knew their secret.

  14. I've heard that same fact about Singapore too! I've heard that city is super clean, as well. Disneyland and Singapore might just be on to something. :)

  15. You're right! It's next to impossible to have a rotten time at Disneyland.

  16. Thank you, Tina. As I mentioned in my email, sending positive thoughts and energy your way for Kfir and the whole family. Happy weekend to you too, T.

  17. Thanks, Jin! So glad you (and everyone) enjoyed those fun facts. When I was including them in the post, I had a little fear that no one, but me, would find them interesting. Happy I was wrong.

  18. Chi, she was so excited to go on a 'big' kid ride. Isn't it funny that when you're young, all you want to do is grow up? The faster, the better.
"Disney's landlord" I love that. :) It definitely helps.
Tokyo is on our traveling wish list! I love that your husband agreed to Disneyland Tokyo...I'd say that's a great compromise.
Good luck with the house hunting (fingers x) and have fun with lunch and dress fitting (so cute!).

  19. We missed you! Though, I'm sure there will be plenty more opportunities to go in the future. M. is going to rule the soccer field. Have fun!

  20. Thank you, Leah! Hm, what is the nearest Disneyland to you? Would it be Tokyo? Well, you've got your own magical animals and sights right in your backyard.
I think the no mustache rule was because Walt thought it made men look unkept. He preferred men to be clean shaven.

  21. Thank you, Erin! Cash cow is right. I asked my dad if we have any valuable land in our family. No such luck. :)
Those pink sneakers are Vans. Keeping it real.
Wishing you a great weekend, as well.

  22. Thank you, Cal. I think it was because Walt preferred his male employees to be clean shaven. I also remember reading that Walt didn't like long sideburns either for the same reason.
Oh, here's another fun fact. Next time you're at Disneyland, look above the fire station on Main Street. There is an apartment above the fire station that Walt use to stay in when he worked late nights. Back in the day, when the light was on, it would mean Walt was in his apartment. Since his passing, they now keep the light on 24/7.

  23. Looks and sounds like you had a great day and lots of fun at Disneyland! I loved my one time there. Thanks for sharing all the fun facts about the happiest place on earth! Being a mountain climber at Matterhorn, Disneyland sounds like a fun job. Maybe I should send in my application, not that I know anything about scaling a mountain. Hope your weekend was just as much fun!

  24. *love* that photo of Eames!
I once worked with a guy who's worked at Disney and he had a book of permissible haircuts. You had to take the book to the hairdresser and tell them which one you wanted. Nuts!
I'd really like to go to Disneyland. I get very confused about all the different parks though.
